DA BEARS, ALL DA TIME!

Roster Moves

Today the Bears signed OL Herman Johnson off of the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. Nicknamed “The House” in college, the 6 foot-7 inch, 360-pounder was drafted in the 5th round out of LSU, and made the 53-man roster, but had yet to play a game and was placed on their practice squad earlier in the week. Since he was signed from another team’s practice squad, he must be and was placed immediately on our 53-man roster. Rookie DE Barry Turner was waived to open up a spot for Johnson. In other moves, the Bears terminated WR Freddie Barnes, OT James Marten, and DE Erwin Baldwin; and signed OLB Marcus Buggs (most recently of the Buffalo Bills) and WR Jeff Moturi (most recently of the Colts’ practice squad).
Obviously the Bears really like Herman Johnson, because again you are forced to put a guy who has no knowledge of your playbook onto your 53-man roster. He has big-college experience, which is appealing, and you can’t coach 6-7. 330 pounds. As for the other moves, Signing Buggs is obviously to get a potential practice squadder and LB depth in the event Tinoismamoa’s and Roach’s injuries become nagging.

Here is what little footage I could find of these guys:
Herman Johnson (LSU #79) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SYjxHlMeQY

Jeff Moturi (UTEP #6): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbMLnZ6JuQs&feature=related

UPDATE: It is believed that the Bears have him projected as a right tackle, so it looks like it is open season for Webb’s RT position. Also, it shows how much the Bears like the way Chris Williams has played at left guard, that they would try to move Williams out to RT and plug in Louis or Edwin Williams at LG. Additionally, Herman Johnson thought he would be drafted last year by the Jaguars, after a long workout with their then-Offensive Line Coach Mike Tice.  So its obvious Tice has been keeping tabs on this guy for awhile, and when he became available, snapped him up.

I like the CB’s in this draft. Most of the good ones are in the top ten. It may be a record breaking year for defensive talent taken in the first round. Thats where all the value is at.

Oh by the way he’s the Biggest baby born in the history of Louisiana. He was over 15 pounds! Ouch for MaMa. That’ll leave a mark.

    • and the OT from LSU is Joseph Barksdale. He would be a solid 3-4 rounder at this point, but I would go no higher than that. The other mock I saw had us taking a CB from Virginia, Ras-I Dowling in Round 1, and Devier Posey, WR from Ohio St in Round 2.

Thats funny because I saw a mock on Bleacher report that had them taking an OT from LSU (you probably know his name since you’re Mr. SEC), and just now I took a peek into the Walter football mock and they have the Bears grabbing a DT from LSU. I guess LSU is the new Vanderbilt. LOL!

    • which DT? If it is Drake Nevis, that dude is a friggin’ MONSTER. Looks like Warren Sapp out there. the only knock on him was that he dogged it at times; but all the games I saw of him, which coincidentally were their biggest games (Auburn, Alabama, Florida) he was an absolute beast. If we picked him , I would be ECSTATIC.

    • whiwch mock was that? the main one I look at has us going: 1) Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh; 2) Rodney Hudson, OG, Florida State; 3)Ben Ilajana , OT, Villanova. If we get Hudson in the 2nd, that would be straight-up HIGHWAY ROBBERY. He’s the best interior offensive lineman in college football, IMO.
