Road to the Draft…Part Two-Offensive Line Prospects

Here is a breakdown of some offensive line prospects who may interest the Bears is the 2011 NFL Draft (Click on underlined names for a link to a video):

1st Round: OT Gabe Carimi (Wisconsin); OT Nate Solder (Colorado); OT Derek Sherrod (Mississippi State); OG Mike Pouncey (Florida); OT Anthony Costanzo (Boston College)

2nd Round: OG Rodney Hudson (Florida State); OT Marcus Cannon (TCU); OT Orlando Franklin (Miami); C Stefan Wisniewski (Penn State)

3rd Round: OG Clint Boling (Georgia); OG Will Rackley (Lehigh); OT James Brewer (Indiana); OT Marcus Gilbert (Florida); OT Jason Pinkston (Pittsburgh)

4th Round: OG Stephen Schilling (Michigan); OG John Moffitt (Wisconsin); OT DeMarcus Love (Arkansas); OT Joseph Barksdale (LSU)

5th Round: OT Lee Ziemba (Auburn); OT Derek Newton (Arkansas State); OT Jah Reid (UCF)

The interesting thing about this list of prospects is that I think the guards on this list are more ready to jump in and start immediately. I am not sure about drafting one in the first round; although Pouncey’s twin brother Maurkice was, in my opinion, the third-best rookie in the NFL last season.I really like Hudson if we can get him in the 2nd round; he is mobile enough to be a LG in Martz’s offense, and can be Kreutz’s eventual successor at C. Of the mid-round guys, I am intriigued by OTs Barksdale, Newton, and Reid—although I think they are more suited to RT in the pros.

I hear Pinkston from Pitt is a target of interest now too. As far as Pouncy goes or any other lineman projected at RT or Guard goes you can find those guys anywhere. I actually like the Bears prospects at every position except LT. Solder is a LT. Without a doubt. If Webb can step in and start 13 games for the Bears as a 7th round rookie I’m pretty confident Solder can do the same. But you need a LT. Not a OG or a RT. If a LT isn’t there you pass on O-line IMO.

    • There are alot of “if” guys in this draft—where one team who is willing to take a couple chances is going to hit big on 3-4 guys in the mid rounds who become all-pros—

Barksdale is interesting. He’s a boo or bust guy according to most sources, ut they say that about Solder too, and I think he’s a real safe pick and think he’s going to be a star under the right coaching.

    • And i am not totally sold on him being able to step right in and play from the jump, the way i feel about Hudson or Pouncey at OG.
